What are you worth?

What are you worth?

Have you stopped to think about how much you have to offer in your current job? Do you feel that your skills are not maximized or that you could be making way more money than you are currently making? Then you are not alone. Millions of people are stuck in dead-end jobs, contributing to the rat-race, facing the same challenges over and over again with no way of escaping the routine. But it doesn’t have to be that way. First you need to recognize your own worth. Read on to find out how you can earn what you are really worth!

Update your resume

A great tool for helping you to recognize your own worth in the workplace is to dedicate some time to your resume. This doesn’t mean that you will necessarily use it to send to employers, but the act of keeping your resume up to date helps you to identify all of the qualities you have developed and all of the skills you are offering your current employer. Armed with knowing your own worth, you are in a better position to negotiate a raise or better working conditions. Recognition of your own worth will give you the confidence to take your vacation time without fear of losing your job and apply for promotions.

Recognize your weaknesses

Even the most successful entrepreneur has weaknesses, but the route to success is to recognize what they are and work towards making sure that those weaknesses are not limiting your growth. Oftentimes you can actually make your weaknesses work in your favor. For example, math may be your weakness, so you take a training course that provides you with simple strategies that actually make you look more skilled than your co-workers. Perhaps you are shy, and you take an assertiveness course and realize there are some keys ways you can break the ice with people that have a charismatic effect. Never underestimate your weaknesses, they could well uncover a hidden talent.

Value all of your qualities

In the world of work, we are often made to value some qualities over others. In sales, competition, enthusiasm and charisma are valued highly. However, when you take time to evaluate all of your qualities, you might find that your empathy is a quality that you can use effectively to help your relationships with clients. You might also think that the fact that you can tap dance has no relevance to selling timeshare, but just imagine taking your clients to the showroom and tap-dancing on the travertine floors to break the ice.

Only Take the Good Stuff to Heart

Receiving praise is always great, and most of us would agree that hearing praise is a good way to know our own worth. But what about when you receive criticism? Constructive criticism should not be taken to heart, but taken straight to the head to be analysed, assimilated and put into practice. On the other hand, praise should be taken to the heart with humility, avoiding the head where the ego is in danger of taking over.

Trust that things are always working out for you

One thing that many successful people have in common is that they do not give up. Setbacks are seen as stepping stones and a way of moving forward. Life is not going to stop after every success to allow you to bask in your glory, nor will the world come to an end if you have a bad day, week or year at work. Trust that life has your back, even when it looks as though you are going in the wrong direction, it is only ever a step along the way.
